After lunch Captai Ogilvie returned from Divisional Headquarters. That evening the men would be evacuated. When they leave Heaps was told by Ogilvie to stay with him due the during of the withdrawal. When the reach the Rhine there were many wounded men around not wanted to be lieft behind. After a while he decided not wait for the boats but to try and swim across. Together with Captain Ogilvie he entered the water, He had to dump his equipment, boots and helmet so not to drown. He losing sight of Captain Ogilvie and when reaching the south side of the river, is pulled out off the water, loosing his wet clothes and after a cup of tea,they were transported to Nijmegen. On Thursday morning they left for Brussels in trucks and from there to Louvian were them embarked to England. Only four of his flight returned.
